Stove Emergency

If smoke is entering the room

Take the following urgent actions:

  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Allow the stove to burn itself out without adding more fuel.
  • Do not stay in the room any longer than necessary to minimize smoke exposure.
  • Do not attempt to re-light the stove until the baffle plate and flue system have been thoroughly checked and cleared of any blockages.
  • Get your chimney swept as soon as possible to ensure it's clear of obstructions.

If You Smell or Suspect Fumes

Carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless and tasteless, and its presence can be masked by other combustion smells. If you suspect carbon monoxide is present, take these urgent steps:

  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Allow the stove to burn itself out without adding more fuel.
  • Do not stay in the room any longer than necessary to minimize exposure to fumes.
  • Do not attempt to re-light the stove until the baffle plate and flue system have been thoroughly checked and cleared of any blockages.
  • Get your chimney swept as soon as possible to ensure it's clear of obstructions.

If the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Sounds

Take the following urgent actions:

  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Allow the stove to burn itself out without adding more fuel.
  • Do not stay in the room any longer than necessary to minimize exposure to carbon monoxide.
  • Do not attempt to re-light the stove until the baffle plate and flue system have been thoroughly checked and cleared of any blockages.
  • Get your chimney swept as soon as possible to ensure it's clear of obstructions.

Most cases of carbon monoxide poisoning with solid fuel are due to poor installation or lack of stove maintenance. Ensure other appliances in the house, such as gas fires or boilers, are not causing CO buildup. If you don't have a CO alarm, get one immediately—they are life-savers.

If the Stove Starts Burning Slowly or Goes Out Frequently

A sufficient flow of combustion air is vital for the stove to burn effectively and safely. In modern, airtight homes, lack of natural ventilation can cause the stove to burn poorly. Take the following steps:

  • Open a window in the room to see if this improves the fire's performance.
  • If opening a window helps, check that any existing air vent (especially if installed with the stove) is not blocked, either inside or outside the house.
  • If you don't have an air vent, seek advice from a Hetas registered or other approved stove installer to ensure your installation complies with Building Regulations air supply requirements.

Wood-burning Stove FAQ

check_box

Will I need to line my chimney?

Before installing a multi-fuel stove, it's essential to have your chimney inspected to assess its condition. For installations without a liner, your chimney should be at least 4.5 metres tall and in Class 1 brick condition, ensuring there are no holes for smoke to escape. If an expert advises installing a liner for better draw and to prevent smoke leakage, opt for a 316 or 904 grade flexible flue liner.

check_box

What fuels can I burn on my stove?

Most stoves are designed as multi-fuel stoves with multi-fuel grates, allowing you to burn a variety of fuels such as dry seasoned wood, smokeless coals, and wood briquettes. It's crucial to use seasoned wood as burning wet wood can reduce stove efficiency, darken the stove glass, cause tar build-up in the chimney, and potentially clog a chimney liner, reducing the stove's kilowatt output.

check_box

How often do I need to sweep my chimney?

It's recommended to have your chimney swept at least once a year. However, if you notice changes in the chimney's draw, more frequent sweeping may be necessary. Always hire a registered chimney sweep to maintain your chimney properly.

check_box

Does my stove need any ventilation?

If your stove is rated over 5 kilowatts, you will need to install a permanent air brick in the room. Stoves rated up to 5 kilowatts only require adequate room ventilation.

check_box

Do I have to install a stove into an existing chimney breast?

No, a stove can be installed as a free-standing unit using a twin wall flue system to vent through an external wall or roof. It must sit on a hearth and have the required clearances around it. Refer to Document J of the Building Regulations for detailed clearance requirements.

check_box

Are there any parts in my stove that will need replacing over time?

Yes, certain parts of the stove, such as the fire grate, firebricks (vermiculite or cast iron), and throat plate, may need replacing over time due to wear and tear. These parts protect the stove's outer skin and can be easily replaced when necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Once Your Stove Arrives

check_box

Why does my stove smell when lit?

A new stove may emit a strong smell when first lit, which is the paint curing. This is normal and usually lasts for 2-3 burns. Open a window during the initial burns to ventilate the room.

check_box

Why won’t the door open?

The door seals are tight when new to ensure efficiency. If the door seems stuck, gently apply force to open it without damaging the handle or fire rope seal. If the fire rope becomes loose, push it back into the channel and leave the door on the catch for the next burn to prevent recurrence.

check_box

Why won’t the vents open?

The vents may be stiff initially as they are machine tightened at the factory. Loosen them using grips and a cloth to avoid scratching the knobs. Once loosened, the vents should operate more smoothly.

Can I Install a Stove Myself?

While the actual installation of a stove is not overly complex and can be managed by most practical DIY enthusiasts, especially if you're comfortable with heights for tasks like dropping a liner down the chimney, we strongly recommend leaving the installation to a professional. A professional installer will have the experience of fitting hundreds of stoves and performing the necessary spillage and safety tests in various situations.

If you choose to install the stove yourself, you must ensure that the installation complies with all current building regulations and submit it for inspection by your local authority Building Control.

What is a HETAS Approved Retailer?

HETAS is the organisation recognised by the government to approve multi-fuel stoves, wood burners, fuels, and services, including the registration of competent installers. The HETAS Approved Retailer certification, established in 2011, ensures that consumers can purchase stoves from retailers who meet high standards for service quality, including expert installation and safety advice.

What does 'HETAS Approved Appliance' mean?

HETAS is the independent UK body recognised by the government of Ireland to ensure the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, as well as boiler stoves. They produce an annual list of products that have been checked and approved for safety and efficiency. It's important to note that inclusion in this list is voluntary, meaning there are many safe and efficient CE-tested stoves that may not appear on the HETAS list.
